Nepean Aquatic Centre Swim Club - Open Water Events

OPEN WATER EVENT CANCELLATION- All Events: Friday 20th & Saturday 21st December 2019

We have assessed the conditions on site at the Sydney International Regatta Centre this morning and at this time the Air Quality remains Hazardous.

Taking this into consideration and the forecasted conditions for tomorrow, which include predicted a maximum of 47 degrees, we have decided to also cancel tomorrow’s 5km Open Water events.

We will provide a refund to all competitors. Further information on how to access your refund will be distributed shortly.

Swimming NSW is working with the Sydney International Regatta Centre to find alternative dates when we can host the NSW Open Water Championships (this will include the 10km, 7.5km, 5km & 2.5km).

We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause however the safety of our competitors, volunteers and spectators is our first priority at all times

Kind regards,

Good Afternoon Swimmers & Parents,

A noted in our last update, Swimming NSW has been monitoring the Weather conditions in the lead up to the SNSW Open Water Championships that will be held on the 20th & 21st December at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

On Saturday 21st of December, the weather forecast is predicting a maximum temperature in excess of 45º Celsius. In light of this we have regretfully had to make a change to the schedule of events for that day. Please see below an updated schedule;

10am – Women’s 13 – 18 Years & Open 5km

Registration for all 5km events will commence at 7am on Saturday.

The event schedule for Friday 20th December at this stage remains unchanged.

  • Swimming NSW will provide a refund to all competitors entered into the JX 2.5km swim. For the JX 2.5km Competitors, a refund will automatically be issued to the card used to make the purchase. If you do not receive this in the 7-10 working days, please let me know.

  • If you wish to withdraw from the 10km, 7.5km & 5km events, please email me ASAP with the swimmers details & I will advise of the refund process.

The following Air Quality & Temperature information still applies to our event;

Based on advice from the Australian Institute of Sport (https://ais.gov.au/position_statements#smoke_pollution_and_exercise) Swimming NSW has determined that if the Air Quality Index reaches a reading classified as Very Poor (at the closest measuring station to SIRC) we will cease the NSW Open Water Championships. The Air Quality Index is updated hourly and this will be monitored throughout the event.

Further, if the water temperature at the event reaches 31º Celsius we will cease the NSW Open Water Championships. The Water Temperature will also be monitored throughout the event.

The safety of our competitors, volunteers and spectators is our first priority at all time. If any competitor wishes to withdraw at this stage due to the forecasted conditions, a refund will be issued.

Depending on weather conditions and the timing of any cessation, Swimming NSW will, wherever possible, re-schedule events. However if this is not possible, events may be cancelled. In the event of a cancellation, a refund will be provided to all competitors.

We will keep our Competitors, Coaches, Volunteers and Spectators updated on event changes in the lead up to and during the event via email, social media and the Swimming NSW website.
